All About Global Home Accessories and Decor

A few years back, global decor was all the rage. Then it became taboo. Now, global home decor is back and better than ever. The internet has allowed people from all over the world to bring their culture front and center. This movement has trickled into home accessories and decor and now, global decor isn’t just about Asian or Indian influences. Global decor can include home accessories from just about anywhere: South America, Australia, Europe and beyond.

Global Home Decor: What to Look For

Following a trend is one thing, but with global home decor, you can easily become your own trendsetter. Perhaps you’ve got a far-off place you’ve always wanted to visit, such as Australia. Instead of following the main trend of global decor (which tends to be more of an oriental influence) why not follow a more Australian influence instead?

For example, you could use prints of Aborigine drawings or a collection of framed boomerangs as your wall art. You can mix and match these with South American fabric prints for your furnitures, such as ikat prints, which will blend well into an Australian-based global home decor theme.

Global decor also has an antique or reclaimed appeal to it. Furnitures that are made from reclaimed woods, such as side tables, coffee tables or dining tables, all fit well into a global decor scheme no matter what country you are pulling your influence from. Antique furnitures also work well, especially when aiming for an oriental-styled global decor look.

When looking at antique furnitures, try to think outside the box. For example, an old antique footstool might make a perfect side table. An antique record player, such as an old Victrola, could be a perfect buffet with some work. Don’t limit yourself with the furniture’s original purpose!

When choosing fabric items such as throw pillows or blankets, don’t be afraid of bright, vibrant colors; especially if going for an Indian, Moroccan or Oriental vibe. Remember, these cultures favor bright, vibrant shades like burnt orange, poppy red and shades of purple, blue and green. If these colors are too much, try pairing them with larger neutral pieces of furnitures or a neutral wall paint, which will help tone them down.

When decorating in a global style, just remember that there are more countries in the world and subsequently hundreds if not thousands of different styles that you could incorporate into a global home decor theme. The world is a vast place, so don’t feel limited by the typical Oriental global decor.

Halloween Decorations – Suggested Halloween Props for Your Home

Halloween decorations originally were all about jack-o’-lanterns and scarecrows. Most of them were totally homemade – from the raw materials to the finishing touches. In many locations around the world, neighborhood contests to see who has the scariest or most impressive jack-o’-lantern and overall home decoration for the season are held.

For those who’d want to decorate their home for this spooky night, here are some suggestions and ideas.

You have to think first why you want to put up decorations of this theme. Is it because you want to dress up your home for your kids and also for the kids who’d be trick-or-treating? You might have to think of Halloween props that they’ll surely love to let them enjoy the occasion. Are you going to have some adult friends visiting you? Or is it just because you want to utilize your creativity at home?

Decide on the theme of your decorations based on the purpose that you’ve thought of. You don’t have to be limited to scary monsters and spooky stuff if that’s not your thing. If you have toddlers in your home, you can design your own Halloween theme. For instance, you can use your kid’s favorite cartoon or fairy tale characters. Or you can simply make candies and treats as your theme. But if you really love the ghosts and goblins, then go ahead and make them as authentic-looking as possible.

If you want to do everything or most of the Halloween props yourself, you have to look at what you have available at home. If you’re a doll collector, you can dress up your dolls in orange and black. You can even make them into witches, mummies, bats, and vampires.

If you think that making all the decorations from scratch is too much for you, you can get a little help from bookstores, supermarkets, specialty stores, and even online shops for some ready-made props and some materials that you still need to assemble. Some materials that you can find in many stores and are easy to put up in your home are spider webs, little creatures made of rubber, plastic jack-o’-lanterns, artificial skeletons, and other such decors. Kids would also love inflatable displays, which sometimes come in the shape of a skull or a life-size mummy.

But all the Halloween decorations won’t be complete if you won’t be dressed up for the occasion. Make sure you get yourself and the rest of your household costumes that will match your theme.

Home Decorating – Important Tips For Renovating a House to Sell

If you are new to renovating I would strongly suggest that for your first project you tackle a manageable job.

My favourite renovator to flip requires just a few things.

1. Garden tidy up, not a major landscaping job.
2. New Carpet. Nothing lifts and modernizes a house like new carpet.
3. Patch and plaster the walls, then paint.
4. Maybe new kitchen bench tops

That’s it. I call this a level one refurbishment. It can often be done inside two weeks. Our current home we did it in 8 days. It was hard work but its out of the way quickly. I like this kind of makeover because it can quickly improve the value of a home by $50,000. It works best in homes at the lower price scale $350,000-$550,000. In our area in Australia there is nothing cheaper than that.

This end of the market moves quickly and many people just want to have a home that feels and smells new. The carpet and paint make it feel as no one has ever lived there before.

A spray paint of the roof may be in order if the tiles or iron are old faded or stained. This can be done cheaply but a contractor may charge the earth.

The next level of renovation is where you make serious structural changes. This is appropriate if the home is in an upmarket area, if the home is already of considerable value and if you are certain that by extending and changing the house there is a good return. We looked at a house for $660,000 recently. A new by similar home which had a $300,000 renovation done sold for $1,200,000. This home is in a street that adjoined a upmarket area. As time goes on more and more homes receive an expensive renovation, bringing up the value of the area. so this house is worth buying, holding for a year or two and then renovating. Perhaps it will increase in value enough without doing anything to it.

That raises an important question, should you renovate at all, or just rent it out for a while and take the capital gain. The location and the state of the market will tell you.

If you do undertake a large renovation by yourself, you will need a good kit of tools, lots of time, a good budget, good trade skills and a good marriage.

Remember the golden rules of renovating.

1. It always takes longer than you expect it to.
2. It always costs more than you expect it too
3. It is always more stressful than to expect.
4. If you think your job will be different, you are wrong!
5. Be prepared to outsource and delegate.

Be realistic, don’t bite off more than you can chew and renovating can be fun and financially rewarding.

Rustic Home Decor Makes a Comeback

Gone are the sleek, cold lines of ultramodern contemporary decorating. The most popular styles of home decorating today emphasize the warmth and congeniality of the country. Decorators are embracing the charm and simplicity of rustic home decor, and combining it with some surprising accents.

For the last few decades, there’s been a distinct split between high-end upscale home decorating and comfortable down-home affordable décor. The high-style magazines featured glossy photos of modern contemporary homes, replete with stone, glass and steel. The colors were stark – black and white with a few slashes of brilliant tones to emphasize the contrasts and smooth lines. Meanwhile, the magazines aimed at Mrs. America around the U.S.A. offered the warm, cozy sensibility of country kitsch and homespun fabrics. Cows and chickens, hearts and patchwork quilts, rag rugs and solid wood furniture filled rooms that invited guests to sit down, take your shoes off and set a spell.

The gap has closed, and one of today’s hottest new decorating styles blends the two into a stylish, classic blend of rustic charm and high-bred functionality. This new style – call it rustic modern – features natural materials (wood and stone, wool, cotton, linen and silk) and floor plans that flow and move into each other without overcrowding. The best examples of rustic décor have the feeling of a country lodge on an estate: open, relaxing and friendly.

Want to bring a bit of rustic warmth to your decorating scheme? Here are some suggestions from top designers.

Go for the country cabin look. Wood wall paneling is back in style – but with a twist. Rustic paneling features wide planks and a rough-hewn look, with a warm, honey tone.

Country crafts can warm your whole room. Try a classic patchwork quilt on a metal frame bed, or throw it over the back of a homespun sofa. Patchwork and appliquéd pillows with a country theme can bring a hint of rustic charm to your living and sitting rooms.

Think hunting lodge. Functionality meets creativity in some of the most charming and whimsical accents. Chainsaw carved bears sit by fireplaces, deer antlers hang on walls to hold hats and wrought iron is everywhere.

The right floor can transform your entire room. Bare wood is beautiful, and fits the style perfectly, but it’s not your only choice. Stone floors softened with woven and braided area rugs, or a classic sheepskin from Australia or New Zealand can be the perfect backdrop for rustic furniture and collections.

Go Navajo. Or Hudson Bay. Woven wool throws in Southwestern designs or a classic Hudson Bay wool blanket are a subtle touch of bygone rustic charm with a masculine feel that’s perfect for this style.

Keep it subtle. Opt for an open floor plan with plenty of seating space and choose your colors and materials to accent a few special pieces.
